- RURAL AND OUTBACK SATELLITE TV -
So You Want to Perfect TV Reception at Your Home ?

Before continuing there are a number of things you should check.
The first is your “ELIGIBILITY” for the commercial stations.
The ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) requirements
in this aspect are not difficult to understand.
Everyone has the right to Receive ABC and SBS Australia Wide.
To receive commercial programming you must fall inside the license area.

If you Live OUTSIDE WA Click - HERE - to view the License Map.
If you Live INSIDE WA Click - HERE - to view the License Map.
(Remember you must be inside the yellow area
to obtain permission for commercial channel reception.
Each map has numbered links on the left side so you can
“Zoom-In” on your area for more accurate detail.)
NOTE – Travellers DO-NOT Have to Satisfy this Requirement

HERE  IS  THE  EQUIPMENT  YOU  WILL  NEED :
Number 1
SATELLITE DISH
( Minimum size at least 65cm though
you should seriously think about 78cm to
guarantee a strong signal.)

** MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE A DISH
WITH A FOLDING ARM AND THAT IS
CALIBRATED FOR AUSTRALIAN USE **

Number 2
TOP NOTCH LNB
(This is the bit on the end of dish arm.)

Cheaper LNB’s can DEFINITELY have
a lower output signal compared
to better Quality LNB’s –
don’t take shortcuts here !
Number 3

SATELLITE
ROOF
MOUNT
Number 4
SATELLITE FINDER
Moving Needle or Digital Style with LEDs?
For my money I always use a Moving Needle Type
as this has an infinite amount of stop points for
readings whereas a Digital LED Meter has normally only 7 – 10.
Number 5
SATELLITE RECEIVER DECODER
Huge variety of choice here.
Ensure you decoder Is Irdeto Compatible
and Bug Free. Ask the salesmen
to pre-tune it for the Optus C1 Satellite.
Number 6
SMART CARD - BEWARE OF PIRATES !
Don’t be left stranded with a
non-working system by becoming the
victim of shonky satellite salespeople.
Optus has begun anti piracy
initiatives early 2006.

Number 7
CABLING
Always use a good quality flexible cable coax that
Minimises loss and interference. RG6 is recommended.
Number 8
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL AND CHARTS

This is what separates the Men from the Boys.
Ensure your salesmen supplies you with an Easy
To follow setup book and chart.
Don’t be tempted into accepting a
“list of towns” showing dish alignments for
various areas. A good easy to read
Chart of Australia is what you are looking for here.
Don’t comprise on this step. Some suppliers also
have an Instructional DVD presentation that can
be very useful your first time!

It always pays to shop around.
Sometimes saving $200-$300 dollars will leave you with countless hours of frustration, expensive mobile phone bills (talking to your supplier to try to figure out why you don’t get a picture) and you unhappy and frustrated after a day on the hot roof.
